about

Although this wasn't an AAS release at the time, it's where it all started. The idea of doing a label that just put out stuff by chums with no pretensions towards success or reward.

The Uk-Indie List was a good old-fashioned Listserv (or mailing list to you youngsters) from before web forums were a thing. You subscribed and then had group conversations by email. Back when you didn't get that many emails, this was a revelation to everyone involved. It got a mention in the small print of one of the weekly music papers and suddenly it became quite popular. Well, I say *quite*. I've no idea how many members there were at its peak but enough for us to come up with the idea of a compilation tape/minidisc (the new THANG baby!) featuring people on the list. Because weirdly, MOST people on the list were also in bands and wanted to get a bit more widely known than their 3 mates in the local pub.

This is how Rob and Mark met, and within 12 months had carried this momentum into starting AAS, along with Mat who was a friend of the band Airport Girl featured here.

It wasn't just a UK endeavour either. Javi, who did the artwork was in Finland. Rich AKA MiLK PLUS was in Berlin and Stasia who ran the listserv was in the US. The idea that we could communicate in near real time with each other was mind-blowing.

Copies were sent (did I mention that it was free?) all over the world.

The credits are a mad mix of old email addresses, weirdly complex and long web addresses, or simply nothing but a snailmail address. The world was evolving at a frightening pace.

I've tried where possible to include WaybackMachine links to websites where they exist, in the individual track credits

Sadly the Wayback Machine didn't crawl the original UK-Indie website which was at http:///www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/UK-Indie but that site was run by Steve Proctor, who was also involved in staging the launch gig for the tape in Oxford at The Point on Sunday May 24th 1998

A very drunken photo of Steve, Mark and Rob is bundled in the downloads

The only other evidence that remains is the 1997 End Of Year Poll that the UK-Indie mailing list members voted for. A snapshot of musical history
